Messages Reaction score 0 Points Experience Just started. Went to petco and picked out the zebra snail with the best looking shell-- put it in my tank next to a rock. When I left and came back 10 minutes later it's on the rock. I sat there 10 minutes watching excitedly to expecting to see him clean the algae in my tank. This morning- still on the rock. I have a 6 gallon but I regret buying this snail, should've got an oto instead. They are cuter, more fun to watch, does a good job cleaning algae WAY faster, and are about the same price. Are all nerite snails this boring? I wanted a horned nerite but petco only had the zebras I saw a video of a horned nerite moving about non-stop climbing on glass and stuff. Is there anything I can do to make mine move?? Junne Fishlore Legend.

I have a 5 gallon tank with two guppies, two shrimp, and and a nerite I think snail. I have had my snail, Stan, for about 10 days. The first three days he didn't move more than two inches from where he was day one on the wall. When I went to poke Stan he fell off the wall spot and landed on a rock and his shell broke. Since then he has not moved more than two inches. His trap door is closed usually but he does not smell like dead snail. I'm afraid that Stan isn't getting enough food even though I often drop bottom feeder pellets into the tank for my shrimp and Stan. There is no competition for food and there's always a pellet around him Stan just won't move. Is he still because his shell is broken? Any help is much appreciated!! Most clean up crews don't live for years on end like other fish will so try not to fuss over it. A cracked shell won't kill a snail. Usually falling in water slows down down the fall so it wouldn't be hard enough to crack a shell unless the shell was thin from not enough Calcium. If he wasn't moving much in the ten days and this is a new tank with no Algae, he could be weak from hunger, hence fell. If you can test your water, I would. You need minimum 15 gal, better 20 gal for Guppies. Thanks for all the help everyone! I attached a picture with my original question of the break which was near the spire part of his shell. Last time I picked up Stan was yesterday morning when his trap door was completely closed. I just picked him up late tonight and he defiently died. M y A quarium C lub. Nerite Snail isn't moving!? By Diana E, 3 years ago on Freshwater Invertebrates. A lot of Nerites only eat Algae and won't tough food. Just keep smelling him daily to see if dead and immediately remove. You could place him on top of an Algae wafer and see if he moves at all in the next hr. Can you put a pic of the crack so I can see how serious it is? They spend most of their time moving around the tank, consuming any algae in their path. Snails are ideal for beginner, as they are likely to make a few mistakes. In this guide we will tell you everything you need to know about nerite snails, including the different varieties, their diet, and an ideal tank setup. These snails are from the Neritidae familywhich contains over species. Most of these species are from brackish, seashore waters, but a few live in rivers and streams. This means that some can be used in freshwater tanks and others in saltwater setups. Those used in freshwater tanks originated from brackish waters in Eastern Africa, so they would normally live in a mixture of salty seawater and fresh river water. Saltwater species tend to be from the Pacific or Caribbean coast. Many of these snails have adapted to live in freshwater so make perfect tankmates for your freshwater aquarium; they should live for years and grow up to an inch. Snails are sold in lots of pet stores, and as one of the most popular species, nerites will be easy to find. You might sometimes notice your snail appears to have fallen over, their muscle foot is very flexible and they can usually flip themselves back over. Snails also need sleepjust like we do, but their sleep happens in day cycles rather than the 24 hour cycle we follow. So, how long does a snail sleep for? They are thought to have around seven bursts of sleep over a hour period and they then are able to have around 30 hours of activity. They also have four sensitive tentacles. Nerite snails will grow up to 1 inch if kept healthy. Different species have different colors and markings, but they share the same basic shape and structure. Zebra nerite snails have stripes across their shells that point towards the center of the coil. The stripes are usually black and yellow in color, but the shade can vary. The stripes are a lot more jagged too which gives each snail a slightly different look. Olive nerite snails are commonly kept in aquariums. The black line of the coil stands out against the olive color and produces a simple but attractive look. Horned nerite snails are a little different to the last three. Saltwater setups will need hiding spots, these can be made using live rock. Live rocks let your snails take advantage of the algae that grows on its surfaces. A snail has four tentacles which are very sensitive. A fine-grained, sandy substrate reduces the risk of scratching. Calcium substrate is best because it means that the snails always have a good supply of calcium, which is needed for a strong shell.

I have 6 nerite snails in my tank with Livebearers because I heard they are best for NOT reproducing. I can see it is not attached to the bottom of the tank. I have heard these are all indications the snail is still alive. I am now going on day two of it not attaching to anything. Should I leave it in the tank?? Global Moderator. A dead snail smells appalling, once you've sniffed it you'll never forget that smell. My nerites go through phases of landing on their backs, and I have to turn them over. But I have to say that once they stop moving, mine have usually died a few days later. Keep an eye on yours, you don't want to leave a dead snail in the tank. Check it very day. Water is all good. I have 6 total nerites and the others are moving around beautifully. Update, my snail is still not moving but also not dead. All other snails are good. I will keep checking every day. My nerite snail hasn't moved in 12 days. This is very unlike him as he is usually very active. My water parameters have always been good whilst I've had him, current readings are ammonia 0, Nitrites 0 and Nitrates around 10ppm. They've been consistent like that for around 6 months now, and I've had the snail for 5. I've read online about the trap door, his trap door is shut and if I try to pull it back, he will close it again. I've also tried smelling him and he just smells like normal fish water, no rotten smell. Is he dead and just not showing the signs? I'm really confused! If he pulls his trapdoor shut himself and smells fine, then that means he's still alive. Sometimes they just do that for a while. Keep checking to make sure he's not dead. Thanks Ninfia, he doesn't instantly close it himself, it's slow but he does it, and like I said no smell. I don't know about sicknesses, but he could be stressed. What tank size is he in? Tank mates? Do you know the water parameters? Unfortunately, when I woke up this morning and checked on him he was dead. He was in a litre with a fantail and shubunkin, who will be in a pond that I'm currently building asap. The parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 10ppm nitrates, I test my water every day and they have been stable like that for 6 months since the tank cycled. I've not ever noticed a problem between the goldfish and him.

It was excellent having the cellphone and we felt comfortable knowing that if things needed to be changed, they would be. Thank you for making our honeymoon stress free. We will use you again in the future. Everything was quiet perfect, the receptions on the hotels, the bedrooms, and the places you recommended to see. As I said before the standard of accommodation was excellent as the rental car. The standards of the meals were good. The itinerary was excellent (we loved Heimaey, especially the hotel). Well, we were a bit surprised (positively) because we didn't have any references at all about your services (we knew about your travel agency by google), and we can say that if we return to a nordic country maybe it will be using the services of Nordic Visitor. The only thing we are disappointed is to never knew the person that make this perfect travel organization. But still thank you for all. I was initially skeptical of what kind of service we were going to be getting, but everything, top to bottom, was very professional and well put together. We didn't have much communication with Dagny, but after having met her in person, we felt like we could ask anything of her. We were really regretful that we didn't get to visit the Nordic Visitor office on our last day to give a video review, and to thank her in person. Have already recommended NV once from our Iceland trip and will absolutely recommend again. Christoph was also wonderful- did a fantastic job in customizing the trip for us (combination of 2 trips), and was also quick to respond and communicate via email. We will definitely book again- the only negative is that the time went by too quickly. We have just arrived back from a most memorable and enjoyable trip which you organised for us. Right from the beginning of our email correspondence, we have been impressed by the quality, dedication and effort you have put into making our tour of Scotland enjoyable. Thank you for going beyond what I would normally expect. The tour and the associated paperwork and maps which you arranged were all marvellous and a good representation of Scotland. Whilst I thought that two days on Skye would be far too long, it was just right. Thank you again for your assistance and I shall endeavour through trip advisor and friends to spread the word about your wonderful company. Nordic appear to be professional, aware of the best locations to visit and stay. The suggested tour is well balanced between places to see and covering the distance.
